prelim task

This was my first attempt at a poster and now when I look back, I can see it was poor effort for me, as I did not use my photography or my editing skills in the way I should have. I will use this as something to look back and improve on. I now know that I need to work on editing and the layout of the poster.
The aim of this poster is to encourage people to join in the school’s sport teams. I used the pointing finger as it appears very direct and if someone was looking at the poster, hopefully they will think the finger is being pointed at them. The pupils will know the PE teacher’s name is Mr Drew, so this also tells them he really wants you. It will hopefully remind people of the first world war poster ‘Your Country Needs You’ which was to encourage people to join the army, so hopefully this will give them the same idea!

(Evaluation) Who is your audience and how will your magazine attract them?
"Old School" has a wide target audience, aimed at men in their late teens up to their 40's giving a larger audience which should increase sales and circulation. I chose to do this as I want to target readers from the 'old school' era but also to introduce people to a new kind of music. It is important that my magazine has no boundaries for people, e.g. it does not matter what age group, race, religion or gender you are.
Whilst this age group would be my preferred market, as by concentrating particularly on them, this should maximise the magazines sales potential, but if younger people wanted to buy it, they would feel comfortable reading it as well.
I really want my readers to understand why they should buy my magazine so it is important to get the message across in a clear, precise way. I think I have achieved this by creating eye catching and interesting photos and text.
My front cover, D.P.S and contents will all appeal to my target audience's likes so will want to read the articles inside my magazine. For example, they will be able to relate to the images above as they will recognise the style of clothing and footwear which they either wear themselves or would want to wear.

(Evaluation ) What institutions would be interested in my magazine.
I chose bauer as they have a wide range of magazines similar to my genre of magazine. They sell a range of magazines aimed at men such as Empire, Kerrang, Mojo and Q. My magazine has some similarity's with these, such as the sex and age of the target audience. However since my magazine is based on Rap and 'Old School' music it is unique and therefor would sell and have a large circulation.
(Evaluation) What I learnt about tecnology
Whilst creating this project I learnt how to use Photo-Shop which was a new experience for me. I found the editing software easy to use and the effects were creative and interesting. I used this to edit the photos for my front cover and double page spread. I was pleased with the overall result.

This was the image used to show the magazine's content. I then used the technology on face book to make it a central image and then have the writing on top.
My skills as a photography student helped me a lot to take good images suitable for my magazine, such as angles for taking the image, lighting, background and contrast with colours. I was already good at using a camera but now feel more confident taking pictures for my magazine. I am always trying to think of different ideas for my photos and also the way which I will edit them. I do this to make it more creative and interesting for the reader.
Whilst using photo shop I removed the background of this image to make it more dominant and stand out on my front page.

Research
To help with my research, I looked at a lot of magazines to see the different layout's, pricing and quality they used and also information about the companies themselves, such as target audience and the sales which they have created. The research was very useful as this gave me a good idea on how I was going to design my front cover and dps.
Magazine Covers
What I have learnt from magazine covers, is that you need a bold image. This will will catch the reader’s eye when they are looking for a magazine that they would like to buy.
I think it is best not to crowd the front cover with too much text, so the reader can clearly see the message I am putting across to them and it will really stand out. It is a good idea to have subtitles to let the reader know what features are inside the magazine so they will want to pick it up and read what it is all about. There might be a time when the reader doesn’t like a certain artist who is the main feature, but may be drawn to a subtitle instead and buy the magazine because of that.
As it’s a first edition, it is important to encourage my readers to buy it, so I am offering a free copy of the Raising Hell album by RUN DMC with every purchase. I chose this freebee as RUN DMC was my biggest influence when creating this magazine and are the main attraction to old school hip-hop, rap and style of clothing. I noticed that the majority of the magazines all seemed to have a similar style e.g one big picture in the centre of the front cover with writing around it and a title at the top of the page.

Hi my name is Josh.
For this project we were told to pick a music genre of any type and create a magazine front cover, contents page and a dps.
My choice of genre was rap, aiming at the roots of rap but also up-and-coming rap artists. I wanted to show the skills which I have learnt in photography such as photoshop in my project.
For this, I used all my own original photography, but first I decided to see how good they looked against pictures downloaded from the Internet, which were in a similar style to mine. I thought my images were as good as those I had found so I edited my photographs on photoshop to create different effects which would aim at my target audience.
